保加利亚首都索非亚(保加利亚语:София;英语:Sofia)是全国政治、经济、文化中心,位于保加利亚中西部,地处四面环山的索非亚盆地内。城市跨伊斯克尔河及其支流,面积167平方公里,人口近120万。

Sofia (deutsch [ˈzoːfi̯a]; bulgarisch София, [ˈsɔfijɐ]) ist die Hauptstadt Bulgariens. Die Stadt liegt in der gleichnamigen Ebene im Westen des Landes. Mit ihren 1.238.438 Einwohnern (Stand 2017) ist sie die größte und bevölkerungsreichste Stadt und administratives Zentrum des Bezirks (Oblast) Sofia-Stadt. Damit lebt etwa jeder sechste (17,5 Prozent) Einwohner Bulgariens in Sofia. Sofia ist in 24 Bezirke unterteilt. Im Stadtgebiet befinden sich der Fluss Iskar sowie mehrere kleinere Fließgewässer.

Die Stadt ist seit der Jungsteinzeit kontinuierlich besiedelt und damit eine der ältesten Siedlungen und Städte Europas. In der Antike als Serdica oder Sardica[2] und im Mittelalter als Sredez bekannt, wurde Sofia nach der wiedererlangten Unabhängigkeit Bulgariens 1878 zur Hauptstadt gewählt und in der Folge zum politischen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Zentrum des Landes. Aus diesem Grunde befinden sich hier heute die wichtigsten Theater, Museen und weitere Kultureinrichtungen des Landes.

Mit seinen Universitäten, die älteste aus dem Jahre 1888, Hochschulen und Forschungseinrichtungen stellt Sofia das überragende Bildungszentrum und mit zahlreichen Verlagen, Rundfunk- und Fernsehanstalten sowie Tages- und Monatszeitungen auch das dominierende Medienzentrum des Landes. Sofia ist Sitz der bulgarischen Regierung, des bulgarischen Präsidenten, der Bulgarisch-Orthodoxen Kirche und weiterer wichtiger Verwaltungs- und Militärbehörden sowie Residenz des Bulgarischen Patriarchen.

ヨーロッパ最古の都市の一つであり、セルディカ (Serdica)、スレデツ (Sredets)、トリアディツァ (Triaditsa) と呼ばれた。その歴史は7千年以上に及ぶとされる[4][5]。有史以前の集落跡が現在のソフィアの中心や王宮の付近、オベリャ (Обеля)、スラティナ (Слатина) などで見つかっている。トラキア人が最も重要視していた、鉱泉の周囲に町を築いた紀元前7世紀にさかのぼる城壁は良いコンディションで保存されている。鉱泉は現在も湧水がある。時代の変遷とともに幾つかの異なる名前で呼ばれてきたソフィアの数千年にわたる歴史の痕跡は、今日でもその一部を見ることができる。

Sofia (/ˈsfiə, ˈsɒf-, sˈfə/ SOH-fee-ə, SOF-, soh-FEE;[12][13] Bulgarian: Со́фия, translit. Sofiya,[14][15] IPA: [ˈsɔfijə] (About this sound listen)) is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. The city is at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country. Being in the centre of the Balkan peninsula, it is midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea, and closest to the Aegean Sea.[16][17]

Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC.[4] Being Bulgaria's primate city, Sofia is a hometown of many of the major local universities, cultural institutions and commercial companies.[18] Sofia is one of the top 10 best places for start-up business in the world, especially in information technologies.[19] Sofia was Europe's most affordable capital to visit in 2013.[20]

Sofia hosts some 1.23 million[3] residents within a territory of 492 km²,[21] a concentration of 17.5% of the country population within the 200th percentile of the country territory. The urban area of Sofia hosts some 1.54 million[9] residents within 5723 km², which comprises Sofia City Province and parts of Sofia Province (Dragoman, Slivnitsa, Kostinbrod, Bozhurishte, Svoge, Elin Pelin, Gorna Malina, Ihtiman, Kostenets) and Pernik Province (Pernik, Radomir), representing 5.16% of the country territory.[10] The metropolitan area of Sofia is based upon one hour of car travel time, stretches internationally and includes Dimitrovgrad in Serbia.[22] Unlike most European metropolitan areas, it is not to be defined as a substantially functional metropolitan area, but is of the type with "limited variety of functions".[23] The metropolitan region of Sofia is inhabited by a population of 1.68 million[8] and is made up of the whole provinces Sofia City, Sofia and Pernik, comprising more than 10,000 km².[24]

Elle compte 1,4 million d'habitants, les Sofiotes ou Sofiiantsi (софиянци) en bulgare, soit 17 % de la population du pays, plaçant Sofia au 13e rang des villes les plus peuplées de l'Union européenne2. Sofia est également la quatrième plus grande ville des Balkans, après Istanbul, Athènes et Bucarest. Elle est à la fois le centre politique et culturel du pays, son principal centre d'échanges ainsi que son premier centre industriel, avec des activités sidérurgiques, métallurgique, de construction mécanique et de chimie3. C'est également un centre universitaire depuis 1888.

La ville occupe une position géostratégique très importante dans la région, ce qui a largement contribué à son expansion démographique.

Sofia (pronuncia sòfia, /ˈsɔfja/;[1] in bulgaro София, Sofija ['sɔfija]) è la capitale e la più grande città della Bulgaria. È il principale centro amministrativo, industriale, culturale e dei trasporti di tutto il Paese, di cui costituisce un distretto a sé stante. Con una popolazione di 1.270.000 abitanti, a cui se ne aggiungono altrettanti considerando l'area metropolitana,[2] è anche la città più estesa e densamente popolata della Bulgaria.

È situata nella parte occidentale del Paese, ai piedi del monte Vitoša. La città conta sedici istituti universitari, tra cui l'Università di Sofia, fondata nel 1889. La città è sede di un metropolita ortodosso bulgaro e di una diocesi cattolica. Tra le principali attrazioni troviamo la Chiesa di Bojana (inserita tra i Patrimoni dell'Umanità dell'UNESCO nel 1979), la chiesa di San Giorgio, la chiesa di Santa Sofia e la cattedrale di Aleksandăr Nevski.

Sofía (en búlgaro: София; tr.: Sófiya; pronunciado: Acerca de este sonido [ˈsɔfijɐ]) es la capital y la ciudad más grande de la República de Bulgaria. Con una población de 1.291.591 habitantes en 2011, se trata de la 14.ª mayor ciudad de la Unión Europea donde ingresó en enero del 2007, y alrededor de 1.380.406 en su área metropolitana, la Provincia Capital.2​ Se encuentra situada en el centro de la península balcánica,3​ al oeste de Bulgaria, rodeada por el monte Vitosha al sur, el monte Lyulin al oeste y las montañas de los Balcanes al norte. Su superficie total es 492 kilómetros cuadrados y su promedio de altitud es de 600 msnm, lo que la convierte en la cuarta capital más alta de Europa.

Una de las capitales más antiguas de Europa, la historia de Sofia se remonta al siglo VIII a. C., cuando los tracios establecieron un asentamiento en la zona. Sofia ha tenido varios nombres en los diferentes periodos de su existencia, pero adoptó, finalmente, el nombre de Sofia, gracias a la Iglesia de Hagia Sofia, una de las más antiguas de la ciudad, en homenaje nacional a las Santas Mártires de Sofia, madre de la Fe, Esperanza y Caridad. El Día de Sofia se celebra el 17 de septiembre y el 4 de enero la ciudad celebra que en 1878 fue liberada de la dominación otomana por las tropas imperiales rusas. Sofia fue declarada capital de 3 de abril de 1879 como antiguo pueblo búlgaro, lejos de la frontera con Turquía, y fue bombardeada intensamente por las fuerzas aliadas durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Sofia es el centro administrativo, económico, cultural, de transporte y educativo del país,4​ donde se concentra la sexta parte de la producción industrial de Bulgaria. La ciudad es, también, un importante centro religioso, ya que Sofia es la sede de la Iglesia ortodoxa búlgara y cuenta con la Catedral de Alejandro Nevski, una de las catedrales más grandes del mundo ortodoxo. En Sofia se encuentra la Academia de Ciencias de Bulgaria, varias universidades e instituciones culturales como la Galería de Arte Nacional de Bulgaria, el Museo Arqueológico Nacional, el Museo Nacional de Historia, el Ballet y Ópera Nacional o el Palacio Nacional de la Cultura, entre otros. La arquitectura de los diferentes pueblos que dominaron Sofia es un ejemplo de la milenaria historia de la ciudad, con edificios de estilo otomano, ruso ortodoxo o de su período socialista. Además, acogió el Festival de la Canción de Eurovisión Junior 2015

Софи́я (болг. Со́фия [ˈsɔfijə], от греч. σοφία — мастерство, мудрость) — столица и крупнейший город Болгарии. Административный центр городской области София и его единственной общины Столична.

Население — 1,43 млн человек (2015 год). Свыше 95 % всех жителей составляют этнические болгары[3]. Расположена на западе Болгарии, на южной окраине Софийской котловины, у подножия горного массива Витоша. Климат умеренно-континентальный.

Узел железных дорог, международный аэропорт, метрополитен (с 1998 года), трамвай, троллейбус. В Софии сосредоточено около 1/6 общеболгарского промышленного производства (машиностроение, металлургия, химическая, резиновая, целлюлозно-бумажная, пищевкусовая, лёгкая промышленность)[4].

В XVI—XVIII веках являлся вторым после Константинополя торговым центром Балканского полуострова. С 1879 года — столица независимой Болгарии.
