埃森，是世界著名企业克虏伯公司的发祥地，但仍以煤都出名，她拥有世界上最大的煤矿设施。最为典型的是佐尔凡然矿区第12号矿井，是由工业建筑大师舒坡和克雷默尔在1928到1932年期间设计建造的。疏密有致，结构严谨，现代化采矿工业的每一运作环节均融化于建筑之中，是包豪斯风格在工业建筑上的典型展示。因其规模之大、保存之完善，以及建筑风格上的独特，而被联合国教科文组织列入世界文化遗产名录。
