New York City (AE: [nuːˈjɔɹk ˈsɪɾi], kurz: New York, deutsch veraltet: Neuyork^[1] oder Newyork,^[2] Abkürzung: NYC) ist eine Weltstadt an der Ostküste der Vereinigten Staaten. Sie liegt im Bundesstaat New York und ist mit rund 8,4 Millionen Einwohnern die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt der Vereinigten Staaten.^[3][4]

Die Metropolregion New York mit 19 Millionen Einwohnern^[5] ist einer der bedeutendsten Wirtschaftsräume und Handelsplätze der Welt, Sitz vieler internationaler Konzerne und Organisationen wie der Vereinten Nationen sowie wichtiger See- und Binnenhafen an der amerikanischen Ostküste und dem Hudson. Die Stadt genießt mit ihrer großen Anzahl an Sehenswürdigkeiten, den 500 Galerien, etwa 200 Museen, mehr als 150 Theatern und mehr als 18.000 Restaurants Weltruf auch in den Bereichen Kunst und Kultur und verzeichnet jedes Jahr etwa 50 Millionen Besucher, davon knapp 12 Mio. aus dem Ausland.^[6][7] Laut Forbes Magazine ist New York City die Stadt mit den höchsten Lebenshaltungskosten in den Vereinigten Staaten sowie eine der teuersten Städte weltweit.^[8]

Die Stadt wird allgemein zu den wichtigsten Zentren der weltweiten Diplomatie gezählt.^[9] Zusammen mit Genf (IKRK sowie europäischer UNO-Sitz), Basel (Bank für Internationalen Zahlungsausgleich) und Straßburg (Europarat), zählt New York City zu den wenigen Städten der Welt, die als Sitz einer der gemeinhin als wichtigsten erachteten Internationalen Organisationen fungieren, ohne jedoch Hauptstadt eines Landes zu sein.^[10]

Nachdem 1524 Giovanni da Verrazzano und 1609 Henry Hudson die Gegend des heutigen New Yorks erforscht hatten, siedelten ab 1610 niederländische Kaufleute an der Südspitze der Insel Manna-Hatta und bald darauf an der Westspitze von Long Island, dem heutigen Brooklyn. Der Legende nach kaufte Peter Minuit 1626 den Einheimischen, wahrscheinlich Lenni-Lenape-Indianern, die Insel „Manna-hatta“ für Waren im Wert von 60 Gulden ab.^[11] Die Siedlung erhielt den Namen Nieuw Amsterdam und war zunächst Hauptstadt der Kolonie Nieuw Nederland, bis sie 1664 von den Briten erobert wurde und die Stadt den seither gültigen Namen bekam.^[12] Ihr Aufstieg zur Weltstadt begann 1825 mit der Fertigstellung des Eriekanals.

Die Metropolregion New York-Newark-Jersey City erbrachte 2017 eine Wirtschaftsleistung von 1,718 Billionen US-Dollar. Unter den Städten der Welt belegt sie damit den zweiten Rang hinter Tokio und wäre als eigener Staat gezählt unter den 20 größten Volkswirtschaften der Welt.^[13]

纽约市（英语：City of New York，或者New York City，缩写为NYC），通称纽约（英语：New York；中文又音译：纽约克），是位于美国纽约州的城市，为美国人口最多的城市、纽约都会区的核心、以及世界最大的城市之一，是对全球的经济、商业、金融、媒体、政治、教育和娱乐具有极大影响力的国际大都会。纽约还是联合国总部所在地^[7]，因此也被认为是世界外交的中心^[8]。纽约还被称为“美国文化之都”^[9][10]，名列世界三大国际都会“纽伦港”之一。^[11]

纽约位于美国东北部，濒临大西洋海岸，坐拥世界上最大的天然港口之一的纽约港^[12]。纽约市共有曼哈顿区、皇后区、布鲁克林区、布朗克斯区、斯塔滕岛区等5个行政区，每一个行政区也各自是纽约州的一个县^[13]。1898年，五个行政区被合并为现在的纽约市^[14]。纽约也是全美国人口最密集的主要城市^[15]，2012年有8,336,697人^[16]居住于302.64平方英里（783.8平方千米）的土地上^[17]。纽约都市区在全美的都会区中也高居第一，人口达到1980万^[18]，同时也是全美最大的联合统计区的一部分，在大区中人口达到2340万^[19]。纽约也是美国语言和人口族群最为多元化的城市^[20][21]，在此使用的语言达到800种^[22][23]，而在2005年，全市有36%的人口是非美国出生的。

漢字の当て字は「紐育市」「紐約市」など^[9]。

ニューヨーク市はアメリカ合衆国北東部の大西洋に面し、巨大なニューヨーク港を持つ。市はブロンクス、ブルックリン、マンハッタン、クイーンズ、スタテンアイランドという5つの行政区（バロウ、ボロウ）に分けられる。2010年の国勢調査における市域人口は817万5,133人を数え^[2]、陸地面積は790km^2[10][11]、人口密度はアメリカ国内の主要都市の中で2位である^[12]。ニューヨーク都市圏の人口もまた国内最大であり、ハドソン川対岸のニュージャージー州ニューアークやジャージーシティ、本土側のヨンカーズやニューロシェル、およびロングアイランドなどを含む都市圏は1,889万7,109人、コネチカット州のスタンフォード、ブリッジポート、ニューヘイブンやニュージャージー州の州都トレントン、内陸のポキプシーなどを含む広域都市圏は2,208万5,649人（いずれも2010年国勢調査）の人口を抱えている^[2]。

アメリカ合衆国の都市の中では公共交通機関が際立って多く利用されており、多くの交通機関が24時間運行している。また人口密度の高さと、その多様性も著しい。2005年の調査によれば、市内では170近くの言語が話され、人口の36%がアメリカ合衆国の外で生まれた人であった^[13][14]。

ニューヨークは「眠らない街」とも呼ばれ^[15]、そのほかにも「ビッグ・アップル」^[16]「ゴッサム」^[17]といったニックネームがある。

ニューヨークは1624年にオランダ人の手によって交易場として築かれた町である。この入植地は1664年までニューアムステルダムと呼ばれていたが、同年イギリス人の支配が始まって現在の名称になった^[18]。1785年から1790年まではアメリカ合衆国の首都としての役割を担った^[19]。

市内には世界的に知られた地区やランドマークが数多くある。自由の女神像は、19世紀末から20世紀初めにかけて、アメリカへ渡ってきた何百万人もの移民を出迎えていた。ロウアー・マンハッタンのウォール街は第二次世界大戦以来金融の国際的中心地であり、ニューヨーク証券取引所が置かれている。エンパイア・ステート・ビルディングや1 ワールドトレードセンターなど超高層ビルも多く建ち並び、ワールドトレードセンターもそのひとつであった。国際連合本部ビルもあり、国際政治の中心でもある。

またニューヨークではハーレム・ルネサンス、絵画の抽象表現主義、ポップアートや、ヒップホップ^[20]、パンク・ロック^[21]、ロフト・ジャズ、サルサ、ディスコ、ティン・パン・アレーなどの音楽ジャンルが生まれた。ブロードウェイ劇場も有名である。

アメリカのシンクタンクが2017年に発表した総合的な世界都市ランキングにおいて、ロンドンに次ぐ世界2位の都市と評価された^[22]。また、2017年に日本の民間研究所が発表した「世界の都市総合力ランキング」においても、ロンドンに次ぐ世界2位の都市と評価された^[23]。

一方、国勢調査局と疾病予防管理センターのデータを使って、ハーバード大学とカナダのブリティッシュコロンビア大学が調査をしたところ、ニューヨークは全米でもっとも不幸だと感じる都市とする結果となった^[24]。

エコノミストの兄弟会社で調査業務を行っているエコノミスト・インテリジェンス・ユニットによれば、2016年9月時点で生活費の世界ランキングで第9位と報じられ、ニューヨークの生活費が世界的に見て高いことが報じられている^[25]。さらに、ニューヨークは世界でもっともビリオネア（資産が10億ドル以上）が多い街であり^[26]、彼らが行う投資活動が世界経済に絶大な影響力を及ぼしている。

New York City, often called simply New York and abbreviated as NYC, is the most populous city in the United States. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations,^[14] New York is an important center for international diplomacy.^[15][16]

Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City is composed of five boroughs, each of which is a county of the State of New York. The five boroughs—Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island—were consolidated into a single city in 1898.^[17] The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York,^[18] making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. New York is home to more than 3.2 million residents born outside the United States,^[19] the largest foreign-born population of any city in the world as of 2016.^[20][21] As of 2019, the New York metropolitan area is estimated to produce a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $2.0 trillion. If the New York metropolitan area were a sovereign state, it would have the eighth-largest economy in the world. New York is home to the highest number of billionaires of any city in the world.^[22]

New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626.^[23] The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York.^[23][24] The city was the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790,^[25] and has been the largest U.S. city since 1790.^[26] The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the U.S. by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,^[27] and is a symbol of the U.S. and its ideals of liberty and peace.^[28] In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity, entrepreneurship,^[29] and environmental sustainability,^[30][31] and as a symbol of freedom and cultural diversity.^[32] In 2019, New York was voted the greatest city in the world per a survey of over 30,000 people from 48 cities worldwide, citing its cultural diversity.^[33]

Many districts and landmarks in New York City are well known, including three of the world's ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013.^[34] A record 62.8 million tourists visited New York City in 2017. Times Square is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District,^[35] one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections,^[36][37] and a major center of the world's entertainment industry.^[38] Many of the city's landmarks, skyscrapers,^[39] and parks are known around the world. Manhattan's real estate market is among the most expensive in the world.^[40][41] New York is home to the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia,^[42][43] with multiple distinct Chinatowns across the city. Providing continuous 24/7 service and contributing to the nickname The City that Never Sleeps, the New York City Subway is the largest single-operator rapid transit system worldwide, with 472 rail stations. The city has over 120 colleges and universities, including Columbia University, New York University, Rockefeller University, and the City University of New York system, which is the largest urban public university system in the United States.^[44] Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the world's leading financial center and the most financially powerful city in the world, and is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.^[45][46]

New York^a (prononcé en anglais : /nuː ˈjɔɹk/^{b Écouter}), officiellement nommée City of New York, connue également sous les noms et abréviations de New York City ou NYC (pour éviter la confusion avec l'État de New York), et dont le surnom le plus connu est The Big Apple, est la plus grande ville des États-Unis en nombre d'habitants et l'une des plus importantes du continent américain. Il n'en reste pas moins que New York est la ville la plus peuplée du pays depuis 1790, avec 8 622 698 habitants selon le Bureau du recensement des États-Unis (estimations de 2017^3,4) et la ville anglophone la plus peuplée au monde. Elle est aussi la troisième plus grande ville du continent américain derrière Mexico et São Paulo. Située au cœur de la mégalopole du BosWash^c, l'agglomération new-yorkaise (20 320 876 habitants⁵) s'étend sur plusieurs comtés de l'État de New York (banlieues est et nord) et empiète sur deux États limitrophes. En effet, l'État du New Jersey comprend ses banlieues ouest et sud, et celui du Connecticut comprend ses banlieues nord-est. Son aire urbaine quant à elle comptait 24 millions d'habitants en 2017⁶.

Avec notamment Genève, Bâle et Strasbourg, New York est l'une des rares villes au monde à être le siège de plusieurs institutions internationales sans être capitale politique d’un État.

New York accueille quelque 50 millions de visiteurs annuellement^7,8,9. Times Square, « The Crossroads of the World »^10,11,12, est l'une des intersections les plus populaires du monde¹³, et le quartier des théâtres de Broadway¹⁴ est la plaque tournante du spectacle dans le pays tout entier et un centre majeur de l'industrie du divertissement dans le monde¹⁵. La ville abrite un grand nombre de ponts et tunnels (789¹⁶ en 2012), gratte-ciel et parcs de renommée mondiale¹⁷.

New York se place en tête dans la triade des grands centres financiers mondiaux avec Londres et Hong Kong, ces trois villes étant appelées par les médias anglophones « Nylonkong »¹⁸.
