Der Text stammt von dem evangelischen Pfarrer und Dichter Wilhelm Hey (1789–1854), der ihn 1837 erstmals veröffentlichte. Bei der Melodie handelt es sich um eine Volksweise, deren heutige Fassung seit 1818 belegt ist.

Es besingt die Geburt Jesu Christi und die Anbetung des Jesuskindes durch die Weisen aus dem Morgenland, die als Gaben Gold, Weihrauch und Myrrhe mit sich führten (Mt 2,11 EU). Nowell ist eine englische Schreibweise von noël, dem französischen Wort für Weihnachten. In seiner jetzigen Form ist es cornischen Ursprungs.

S.T.S. (auch STS; Akronym aus „Steinbäcker – Timischl – Schiffkowitz“) war eine dreiköpfige Pop-Rock-Band aus Österreich. Das Trio wurde 1978 von Gert Steinbäcker, Günter Timischl und Schiffkowitz (bürgerlich Helmut Röhrling) gegründet. Alle drei Musiker stammen aus der Steiermark, was immer wieder in ihren Liedern anklingt.
