Er war die erste Singleauskopplung aus dem 1982 veröffentlichten Album Einzelhaft. Das Lied war ein Nummer-eins-Hit in Österreich, Deutschland, Spanien, Italien und Japan und erreichte auch in Australien die Top Ten.

Das slowakische Pendant „Horela lipka, horela“ (dt. „Die Linde brannte, sie brannte“) hat die gleiche Melodie.
